History of film genre

'Heathers' - Michael Lehmann
Independent film 

In 1908 Thomas Edison created the first major film studio. However certain filmmakers believed in preserving the artistic integrity of independent film making. They created films independently against the will of Edison resulting in many lawsuits. Through this independent film was born.


Comedy 

'Dr Strangelove' - Stanley Kubrick
Comedy as a whole is a very broad genre. A sub genre is black comedy which makes the audience laugh at serious issues. The topics are often considered as taboo because of their serious nature. One of the most well known black comedy films is Stanley Kubrick's 1964 film 'Dr Strangelove'. It focuses on nuclear war. In modern cinema there are many examples of black comedy films including: 'This is the end', 'Pulp fiction' and 'Heathers'. All of which received criticism for their subject matters.
